A Brief history of Aston
Aston is located north-east of the city centre of Birmingham and is within the West Midlands area of England. Aston is now home to 28000 people and has a high population density compared with the national average. Aston is currently represented by Labour councillors and has a Ward support officer- Pat Whyte.
Aston began life as an area of woodland, home to a church, a priest and a mill, according to the Domesday Book in 1086. Despite the area’s church being much improved over many years, the Church of SS Peter and Paul still remains and can be seen today. Similarly, other old buildings including the Aston Hippodrome and Aston Hall are notable places to visit in the area. After World War II the area underwent a major redevelopment which saw the area of Newtown emerge to the West. This area consisted of 16 tower blocks- all of which have now been destroyed and replaced with better quality housing.
More recently however, the area is best known for being the home of Aston Villa football club and the top higher education institution Aston University, both of which have been responsible for putting Aston ‘on the map’.
Aston Villa F.C have played at Villa Park since the late 19th century and the park is known for being one of the largest grounds in the whole of England. Many notable international and national games have been played here and the grounds have even hosted international rugby league and rugby union games.
Aston University founded in 1895 is a research led university with a world class reputation. Home to faculties such as the School of Engineering, School of Health services, Languages and Aston Business school, all subjects are taught on one campus and are known for their high quality teaching and high graduate employability.
Aston’s fantastic transport links mean it is a popular place to live, despite much of old Aston being demolished, it has been replaced with newer housing and flats which meet the modern needs of its residents. Aston has been greatly improved over the past 20 years and with plans to further improve the quality of life of its residents, the area is up and coming.
