Some Interesting Facts About Bewdley

Located to the west of Kidderminster, along the River Severn, Bewdley is a small town and civil parish in the county of Worcestershire. Home to a population of approximately 9500 people, Bewdley is a town with lots of history and many historical features are still visible today.

Bewdley was first mentioned in the Domesday book when a small settlement known as Wribbenhall was recognised as being part of the manor of Kidderminster. Later on, the area became known as beau lieu which is french for ‘beautiful place’. The town was later granted borough status in 1472 by king Edward IV who also granted the area a weekly market. This was unchanged until 1974 following a government reorganisation. More recently, Bewdley is governed by a local council and Worcestershire county council and is included in the Kidderminster constituency- governed by Mark Garnier.

The town also played a part in World War II, being home to Ribbesford house, this was used to house the Free French cadets before they teamed up with other allies for the D Day invasion. Here around 200 teenagers would have undertook military training, preparing them for war.

In recent years, Bewdley has made local headlines for being the area at risk from localised flooding from the River Severn. The town has been the victim of lots of damage to residential and commercial properties over the years, due to the River Severn bursting its banks. After dreadful flooding in 2000, the area was granted £7 million for flood defences and work was completed in 2006. This, it is hoped, will limit the damage from flooding in future and will give local residents peace of mind, particularly in the winter months of the year.
