Some Historical Facts You May Not Have Known About Bilston
Bilston is located to the north-west of the West Midlands and lies on the south-eastern corner of the city of Wolverhampton. Three wards of Wolverhampton city council cover the area which include; Bilston East, Bilston North and Ettingshall- which comprises part of the city and part of Bilston. The area is steeped in history and played a particularly significant role in the industrial revolution which saw the area change from a rural village dependent on farming, to an industrial town dependent on mining.
Bilston’s early history dates back to 935 AD where the area was referred to as Bilsatena. Later the area was mentioned in the Domesday book as a rural village known as Billestune which can be taken to mean ‘the settlement of the folk’. The area is thought to have remained largely rural until the 19th century which saw the changes brought about by the industrial revolution.
Throughout the 1900’s the area underwent extensive development which included factories and coal mines being constructed in the area. Many houses were built between the 1920s and 1960s to house workers and by 1964 there were over 6000 council houses. Bilston Steel Works was at the heart of this change, with a number of blast furnaces being erected in the latter half of the 19th century, all contributing to the yearly outputs of 25000 tons of steel. Despite the area remaining profitable during the interwar years, many of the housing was now tired and dated and by the 1970s much of the older housing had been replaced with new, modern housing.
The now urban area was granted a Royal Charter in 1933 and so the area became a municipal borough (later in 1966 this would be abolished and the area was incorporated into Wolverhampton). Bilston town hall has recently been redeveloped and is now open to visitors who would like to find out more about the town’s fascinating history.
