A Short History of Bournville

Bournville is described as a "Model Village" and is situated 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Birmingham.

It originally consisted of just a few cottages and farmhouses, with the only visual highlight being Bournbrook Hall until the area was linked with the Cadbury family.

In 1861, Quaker brothers George and Richard Cadbury inherited the Cadbury business from their father and in 1879 they purchased the Greeenfield site and named it "Bournville".

The Cadbury brothers were widely known for their fair treatment of their employees, with high wages and good working conditions. They were even pioneers of the pension scheme and staff medical services.

In 1893, George Cadbury created the "model village" that helped to alleviate the cramped housing conditions of the time.

The Model Village saw 313 cottages and houses being built by 1900, with much of the same been carried out before World War I.

As the Cadbury family were Temperance Quakers, no public house or off-license has ever been built in the Bournville area and, although the Rowheath Pavilion has had a liquor license since the late 1940's, no alcohol is ever served.

There's an array of parks & recreation areas located within Bournville village, originally created for the health, fitness and wellbeing of the staff of Bournville’s world famous Cadbury's chocolate factory.

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation proclaimed the village to be "one of the nicest places to live in Britain".

The Bournville Village Trust was formed in 1900 to oversee the development of the estate to ensure that it remained in keeping with the fundamental ideals originally fostered by its founders the Cadbury brothers.

The Cadbury factory is the area's biggest employer and the factory’s ‘Cadbury World’ attraction has helped to put Birmingham on the map as a tourist destination.
