Did you know?

Burton upon Trent, known as either Burton-on-Trent or simply Burton, is a town located near to the River Trent in East Staffordshire, UK, close to the border of Staffordshire and Derbyshire. In the 2011 census the town had a population of 72,299. People of the area are known as ‘burtonians’.

Burton is perhaps best known for its brewing. The town originally expanded and aged around Burton Abbey. Burton Bridge was also famed for being the site of 2 famous battles, in 1322 when Edward II beat the rebel Earl of Lancaster and in 1643 when royalists were able to capture the town during the First English Civil War. William Lord Paget and his allies were responsible for extending and developing the manor house within the abbey grounds and for pioneering the extension of the River Trent Navigation to the area of Burton. As a result of this, Burton grew into a busy market town by the early modern period, which carved much of the Burton we see today.

Burton is also known for its contributions to the manufacturing industry, the first shoemaking factory opened here in 1920 and gave the area a source of income before its closure in 1989.

The town more recently is a modern commuter town served by public transport. Of note is the Burton-on-Trent railway station which allows people to access the nearby cities of Derby and Birmingham. Brewing is still a major trade in the area with 8 brewers producing well known brands such as Hobgoblin and pedigree. The town is home to a shopping centre and hosts an indoor and outdoor market, the shopping centre’s footfall is consistently increasing and this bodes well for the many shops and workers that rely on the centre for trade and income.
