A Short History of Curdworth

Curdworth is located in Warwickshire, 8 miles (12.1 km) to the east of Birmingham. It is sandwiched between the M6 Toll and M42.

Curdworth’s origins are believed to have started somewhere between the 6th or 7th century by Anglo Saxon settlers. Mentioned in the Doomsday book of 1086, Curdworth Hall is an Anglo Saxon moated building, but now the moat is buried under the M42 motorway.

It was the home of the Arden family and therefore has links to William Shakespeare (maternal relations).

One of the many industries in this area was a Marl Pit which extracted clay and calcium carbonate that was used as fertiliser. Other notable industries included turnip and barley farming.

A notable event in the area was the Battle of Curdworth Bridge between the Cavaliers and Roundheads (1642-49) during the Civil War that was taking place at that time. Casualties from this Great War were buried in the graveyard of St Nicholas and Peter Ad Vincula, with a red brick rectory attached and located north-east of the churchyard, believed to be dated around 1640.

Curdworth was twice voted the “best kept village” in Warwickshire in 1995 and again in 2000. In 2007, it was voted the “best kept village” in North Warwickshire.

The river Tame can be found on the village’s southern boundaries, where a bridge link has been made that links this once thriving place to Coleshill Rd and Lichfield Rd across the Tame. The bridge was built by John Harman (Vesey) Bishop of Exeter. The Birmingham and Fazeley Canal also passes nearby.

Within this parish, one can also find the hamlet of Minworth.
