A short history of Darlaston

Darlaston is located in the Walsall area of the West Midlands, North of Birmingham.

There is little known about the origin of Darlaston due to intense coal mining across the 18th and 19th centuries. This heavy industry destroyed much of the evidence that lay there of its past and so much of its known history is fairly recent.

Darlaston Manor was owned by the de Darlaston family who occupied the house between the 12th and 15th century and was later renamed the Great Croft when the family died out. The manor is believed to have stood where the current Asda Car Park lies, but as mentioned previously, its exact site is unknown due to a lack of archaeological evidence.

Due to its South Staffordshire location, Darlaston was occupied by industry very early, it began with a cottage industry and anyone wishing to find and source coal had to apply to the Lord of the Manor. The first coal mines arrived in the 17th century and in the first year just over 3000 sacks of coal were sold. Alongside this, a windmill was constructed around this time and operated until 1860.

By 1860 the town had become well known for its nut and bolt industry and had gained a population of 6000. Large areas of the land became owned by the coal mining industry and were taken over by navigation ways and transport routes.

After intense bombing in the Second World War, the town became regenerated and much of the poor conditioned housing which had been previously damaged was replaced. Now the area is home to a number of council and privately owned properties. The area is also served by one secondary school, Darlaston Community School, which recently became the third Grace Academy.
