A short history of Derby
Derby is a city located in the county of Derbyshire, North of the city of Birmingham and surrounded by the cities of Leicester and Nottingham. In 2011 the city had a population of approximately 250,000 people. In its early history, Derby was mainly known for being a market town and it did not grow until the industrial revolution. Like much of this region, its growth was in large part thanks to the growth of industry in the area, of importance was the arrival of its train service in the 19th century.
Remaining with transport, the area is also now known for being home to the second largest aero-manufacturer in the world- Rolls Royce and for being the only remaining train manufacturing city remaining in the UK. More recently, Derby is known as being a friendly and accessible community for the deaf, being home to 3x the national average number of sign users. This, coupled with the multi-cultural demographics of the city, make it an exciting place to visit.
The city educates its population in many primary and secondary school and is home to the University of Derby, a popular choice with post-16 pupils.
In terms of geography, the area is located near to the River Trent and Derwent which both provide a number of leisure activities for the population and visitors alike.
After slum clearance in the 1920s and 30s the area has also recently improved its living conditions which means it is now a much safer city for the population. Alongside this clear up process, a number of new housing developments have sprung up on the outskirts of the city which will no doubt provide further high quality housing for thousands of families.
