Some interesting Great Barr facts.
Great Barr is a large area located north-west of the city of Birmingham. It is situated in the county of the West Midlands, despite historically being recognised as part of Staffordshire. Barr is a word that means hill and there are neighbouring areas such as Perry Barr and Barr Beacon which share this name with the area of Great Barr.
In its past, Great Barr was known for its largely rural landscapes, particularly recognisable before the First World War. However, post 1920, the area became a hub for development and this included the erection of private and council housing which continued stretching into the urban area of Perry Barr. By the time of the Second World War in 1939 the area was now known for being heavily residential and having excellent connections to West Bromwich, Walsall and the city of Birmingham.
It is safe to say that the growth of Great Barr continued well after both world wars, particularly in the 60s when the area gained a motorway link (via the M6) to the easily accessible north and south of the country. Despite the large traffic issues that this has brought to the area, it has also enabled the residents to access all the amenities and opportunities found in our nearest cities. This has arguably been the cause of Great Barr turning into a commuter town.
There are many places of interest that are arguably overlooked, that are situated in Great Barr. Bishop Asbury Cottage is owned by Sandwell Council and is a Grade 2 listed building- accessible via appointment only. Similarly, Great Barr Hall is a Grade 2 listed building and is currently undergoing large repairs. The Red House Park is open to the general public and provides excellent leisure activities for local residents. Alongside these listed buildings are many schools, both secondary and primary that serve the residents of the area. And the many shops and facilities found along its high streets that provide a community feel in some areas.
