Some interesting facts about Halesowen
Halesowen was historically part of Worcestershire, and is approximately 7 miles from the city of Birmingham. The town is 6 miles from Dudley town centre and has a population, as measured by the latest United Kingdom Census (taken in 2001) was 55,273. Halesowen is currently held by the conservative party under James Morris.
Although a mainly urban area, Halesowen does share borders with green belt land and have excellent transport networks linking it to nearby rural areas. The Clent Hills are nearby and are extremely popular among walkers and families. The area of Halesowen is well connected by major road networks such as Junction 3 of the M5 motorway, which allow easy commuter access to Birmingham and surrounding cities. The centre of Birmingham can be accessed via the Hagley Road which takes around half an hour, this is also served by the number 9 bus.
The centre of Halesowen is home to a Norman church, a football ground where the local football team come to play (Halesowen FC) and a College which was founded in the 1930s and serves the teenage population of the area.
The majority of housing stock in the Halesowen (and surrounding) area is privately owned and was built following the destruction of areas during World War II. Despite the fact some of the town is made up of Victorian and Edwardian houses there are still signs of areas which were rebuilt in the 60s.
In the Domesday Book Halesowen is mentioned as being even bigger than the city of Birmingham and was gifted to Welsh Prince David Owen which is where its name comes from. The Parish later broke up into smaller parishes and was transferred to Worcestershire in 1844.
The area began life with a market and a fair and a population of only 600 people but now the area is well known for its services and facilities such as Merry Hill shopping centre. During the industrial revolution the area was well known for nail making however this tended to be on a smaller scale. The development of the motorway soon brought more organisations to the town.
Halesowen is now considered to be a family friendly and accessible place to live.
