A Short History of Hall Green

Hall Green is located 4.1 miles (6.6 km) south of Birmingham and is predominantly residential with a population well over 27,000; it has an overall population density of 4,867 persons compared to Birmingham as a whole per km².

The area is widely inter-cultural, with ethnic minorities making up over 25% of its population.

In 1704, the ‘Job Marston Chapel’, rumoured to have been designed by Sir William Wilson, was built. The name was later changed to ‘The Church of the Ascension’ but there is no clear record as to when this happened. ‘Highfield House, another historical building in the area, is the oldest house in the area, dating back to 1850.

A particular point of historical interest in this area is Sarehole Mill. This dates back to 1542 and is one of only two working watermills in the Birmingham area. In 1755, scientist Matthew Boulton, one of the pioneers of the Industrial Revolution, leased this mill. Sarehole mill has been used for grinding bones (for fertilizer), metal rolling, and wire drawing as well as for milling grain.

Use of the mill ceased in 1919 but in 1969 it was restored and is now open from Easter to October each year as a popular tourist attraction. The mill draws its power from the river Cole as well as steam engine power. Nowadays, the mill is used to make wholemeal flour, used by locally by restaurants and bakers and also sold in the shop onsite.

Hall Green has seen its fair share of industrial activity, such as a chocolate factory which later made electric vehicles and fork lift trucks.

Several locations in this vicinity were used as inspiration for the books ‘The Hobbit’ and ‘Lord of the Rings’, as J.R.R. Tolkien moved into the area when he was a child. Each year in the grounds near to Sarehole mill, an annual event is held to celebrate the life and works of Tolkien.

Originally a rural backwater, the Hall Green area has evolved into a much sought-after area of Birmingham for living in. The area has had a number of large homes privately constructed and care was taken to ensure that many green areas were left untouched, ensuring that the urbanization of the area reflected and took in many conservation aspects.

The Residents Association has ensured that the area around the River Cole Valley has been kept as a green corridor.
