A short history of Harborne

Harborne is a thriving and bustling Victorian suburb of Birmingham, with a large area of housing dating from pre-1900. The area is centred on its high street which is home to residences and retail outlets alike. The earliest section of what is known locally as 'Harborne Village' is St Peter's Church which is a C of E Church located on Old Church Road. This building dates from Anglo-Saxon times (it is believed that St Chad preached there).

The tower of the Church was rebuilt in 1400 and there is also some evidence of a Roman fort which would have been located in the area now known best for being home to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

The earliest known mention of Harborne comes from the entry in the Domesday book of 1086 however it is widely accepted that the area and settlement of it pre-dates this.

The area of Harborne is well known for having been a non-Quaker area of the City of Birmingham. As a result, Harborne became well-supplied with public houses, this greatly contrasts to nearby areas such as Edgbaston and Bournville. There is now the well-known "Harborne Run" pub crawl consisting of around 10 pubs (however the itinerary varies from person to person).

Originally being part of Staffordshire, the area of Harborne became part of Warwickshire in 1891 due to Local Government orders. In 1974 it then became part of the West Midlands and a county borough of Birmingham.

Despite its railway networks closing to passengers in 1934, the area of Harborne is well connected with an extensive bus network and easy access to Birmingham City Centre. There is a nature walk and cycling route which can also be followed to the city. The area now offers lots to its residents and visitors alike with shops, leisure facilities and education all being of good quality and attracting lots of people all year round.
