A short description of Kidderminster

A large civil parish located in the Forest District of Worcestershire, Kidderminster is now a large town that is home to almost 60,000 people. The area is located roughly 17 miles away from Birmingham City Centre and lies to its South-western region. Being within 15 miles of the city of Worcester, the area is well connected and is a popular commuter town.

The area of Kidderminster is beautiful. Lucky enough to overlook both the river Stour and the Stafford and Worcester Canal, which both run directly into and out of the town, the area is also home to St Mary and All Saints church, both of which sit proudly in the sky line adding to the spectacular scenery.

Historically, Kidderminster was first populated by an Anglo-Saxon tribe. Later a monastery was created in the area (although it did not get its name until the mention in the Domesday Book of 1086). The area was just a small settlement until a market was established in 1240 and much later when the churches were built in the 1800s the area began to gain some significance.

The area of Kidderminster is currently undergoing a wide-ranging regeneration scheme which it is hoped, will lead the town of Kidderminster to become a local hotspot for visiting people. In particular shoppers. This regeneration is focused in and around the retail district of Weavers Wharf however it is hoped the benefits will be far reaching. A great example of the work so far is the wharf complex and Sllingfield Mill, a Grade II listed building that has been converted from its former glory as a water mill to a popular retail outlet.

In more recent times the area has ensured that it supplies its residents and visitors with an abundance of things to enjoy. On the outskirts of the town lies the area’s manufacturing industry which provides jobs for residents in the luxury yacht-making industry. Performing arts are catered for in the Rose theatre which is home to a theatre company who ensure regular performances of Shakespeare’s plays are accessible to all. And finally sports fans will not be disappointed with Kidderminster Harriers FC which play in League 1 and train in the town.
