A Short History of Kingstanding
5.3 miles (3.29 km) north of Birmingham lies Kingstanding. The area is predominantly residential and was vastly expanded upon after 1928 - before that it was largely a rural area - and 1934 saw the completion of the area’s first estate.
In 1884, a hoard of Roman coins were found when digging started for a Water Power Station, indicating that Kingstanding’s history can be traced back to Roman times.
Kingstanding reputedly received is name in 1642 when King Charles I inspected his troops standing on Neolithic Bowl Barrow during the English Civil War. He is also believed to have stayed at nearby Aston Hall.
In 1935, the first Cinema appeared in Kingstanding and although the structure of the building still remains, its character has changed dramatically. It was designed by Cecil Clavering.
Around 1930 through to 1940 most of the current houses were built and this largely consisted of council homes. At the time of building, this was deemed to be the largest council home project throughout Europe, consisting of around 6,700 homes.
There are two reservoirs located in the area: Perry Barr (set on the site of former Perry Barr Farm) and a covered drinking water reservoir.
During World War II, Kingstanding received a barrage of bombing and several people were killed as a consequence of these attacks.
The novel "The Last Viking" by Dr Ron Dawson features Kingstanding, using the estate and many local characters for backdrop for this Birmingham based novel.
Some other prominent residents of the area have been: Lisa Wallace (big brother 2009), Lloyd Dyer (footballer), Katrice Horsley (storyteller) and Doreen Jaen Mooney MBE (philanthropist).
Kingstanding is also home to the 23rd Special Air Service Regent.
The Kingstanding area covers various wards, namely: Perry Common, St Mary’s College, Witton Lakes, New Oscott, Wyrley Birch and Kingstanding itself.
