A Short History of Knowle

The village of Knowle is situated 3 miles (4.8km) southeast of Solihull and lies within the boundary of Warwickshire; its constituency is known as Meriden.

Knowle is covered by the M42 motorway which is situated about 1 mile (1.60 km) south of the village. It is 13 miles (20.92 km) to the south of Birmingham, 10 miles (16.09 km) north of Warwick and about 10 miles (16.09 km) from Coventry.

The village square houses Knowle’s 15th century church and guild house.

The Chester House Library has parts of its building that can be traced back to the 13th century, and became a public library in 1975 when it was modernized and restored.

The population has grown to over 11,000, making the area into a large village or a small town. However despite this fact, Knowle has been able to retain its rustic charm old fashioned look and feel, with its many shops that run through the centre of the village along its High Street and small shopping precinct.

The area is very popular as a dining out destination as there are many fine dining restaurants along the length of its high street.

The Grand Union Canal which links Birmingham to London runs through Knowle and is widely used even in today's modern times.

Knowle does not have a direct rail route but there is a station at Dorridge which is 1.5 miles (2.41 km) away and it is also served by nearby Solihull station 3 miles (4.82 km) away and Birmingham International which is 5 miles (8.04 km) away.

It does, however, have a regular bus service which runs every ½ hour, and parking in Knowle is free and located just behind the shops off the High Street in the side roads.

Knowle not only boasts a football team but has its own cricket team. There is a children’s play area that is owned and run by The Natural Trust which is situated close to its only Primary School.

It boasts an historical society which endeavours to keep the old village traditions vibrant and its old heritage alive. The society regularly operates tours around the village to showcase the area’s interesting features.

Knowle also lies in close proximity to Leamington Spa and Stratford-Upon-Avon and houses in the area are more geared towards middle to upper class residents.

Jasper Carrott (comedian), Karen Brady (businesswoman) and John Wyndham (writer) are just a few of the notable residents who come from this area.
