A short history of Leek
Leek is a town (market) and a civil parish in the area of Staffordshire located near the West Midlands in England. The town is situated along the River Churnet and is just 10 miles away from the city of Stoke. This borough is ancient and was granted its royal charter way back in 1214.
The area is the administrative centre for the Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, having previously been the area in which the 6th Earl of Chester was granted the right to hold a weekly market and was home to an annual week long fair in Leek.
For hundreds of years Leek’s economy was heavily reliant on cattle markets. This reflects the local farming nature of the town. Following the industrial revolution in the 19th century, the area became better known for being a huge producer of textiles, working with silk dominantly. This industry has now ceased.
The previous industry of the town is mirrored in the architecture of the area and many mills can now be found which have been converted into housing. Many of the other buildings in the area are Victorian or older and these provide a lovely scenic area surrounding the Market place.
Geographically, the area is physically beautiful and is surrounded by countryside and Staffordshire moorlands.
Many of the residents of the town are commuters working in the nearby cities. Some notable residents include James Brindley a famous 18th century canal engineer, professional darts champion Eric Bristow and Anna Watkins who won a gold in rowing at the 2012 London Olympics.
Local attractions include Rudyard Lake and the Steam Railway which are popular among tourists. Similarly, the market place and Leek Town Football club become hubs of activity at the weekends attracted many visitors per year. The surrounding countryside as mentioned previously, Staffordshire Moorlands, also provide a physical attraction to the population.
