A Short History of Minworth

Minworth is situated 3.5 miles (5.6 km) northwest of Coleshill. It is a small village with a population of around 300 people. It lies 8 miles (13 km) north of Birmingham.

Originating around the 6th or 7th century by the Angle settlers, Minworth historically has its link through the Arden family from 1298 to 1659 - they resided at Peddimore Hall which was a double moated residence.

It was recorded in the Doomsday book in 1086 as “Meneworde”.

During an excavation for the foundations for sewage works, fossilized bone evidence of woolly mammoth who roamed the Earth one million year ago was found.

The sewage treatment works was very well known and quite large in size, with a number of sewage farms that ran along the bank of the river Tame.

Minworth Mill operated from the 14th century until 1872 and was used for grinding corn, but by the middle of the 18th century it was used for boring gun barrels. In the 20th century the mill was replaced by an industrial estate.

Minworth was linked to Curdworth before it became a civil parish in its own rights from 1894 to 1912 when it was re-assigned to Meriden Rural district. This was abolished in 1931 when it then came under the ruling of Birmingham.

Minworth still retains itself as a small residential hamlet village and is widely known for its various supersized shops like Asda, Gateway, Wickes, Screwfix and Homebase. These companies are the major employers within this area.

Minworth has 2 pubs: the Hare ‘N’ Hound and the Market Vaults. It also boasts a social club.

So far residents have resisted all attempts to colonize it into a more residential district and so therefore it still retains its quaint and rustic small village status.
