A Short History of Moseley

Moseley is located 3 miles (4.8 km) south of Birmingham city centre. It is mainly a residential area but there are a few bars and restaurants and even some boutiques along with other independent outlets.

The town dates back to the Doomsday book of 1086. Its oldest church is St Mary's which received its license in 1405 from the then Bishop of Worcester.

Moseley Hall was re-built in 1700 due to rioting that saw it burnt down. In 1891 it was donated by Richard Cadbury to Birmingham and now forms part of Moseley Hall Hospital.

Moseley Village, as it is known locally, was modeled around a Victorian Style Shopping area.

‘Spring Hill College’, formerly known as Moseley School, was built in 1857 and some of its former pupils have included Bev Bevan (ELO) and comedian Jasper Carrott.

From 1867 to 1961 Moseley had its own railway station.

Moseley itself started to be developed around 1910 and was designed as a suburb to cater for Edwardian middle class families, with homes having room to house at least 1 servant.

After World War I, most of these premises became harder to manage and they were no longer economically viable. This provided outside investors with an opportunity to swoop in and capitalize on this fact and the era of the landlord rental market began to spring up in Moseley for student lets from the 1960’s onwards.

The town also home to the Moseley Rugby Football Club who were regular finalists in the 1970’s and 80’s.

Some famous people who have resided in this area: Neville Chamberlain (Prime Minister), Ocean Color Scene (band), Nick Rhodes (Duran Duran), Ali Campbell (UB40), Carl Chin (historian), Jonathan Coe (author) and Dan Bull (rapper/songwriter).
