A Short History of Penkridge

A quaint rustic village located 5 miles (8 km) north of Staffordshire and 10 miles (16.1 km) south of Wolverhampton, Penkridge rests in an easterly direction on the river Penk.

Penkridge is steeped in history and records show that it was documented in the Doomsday book of 1086, where a community of clerics was said to have lived. It continued to house a religious community as St Michaels’s collegiate church right into the 16th century.

A royal charter was granted by King Edgar (959-975) in which he called it a “famous place”.

This picturesque town with its manor and church would seem to go back even further to the reign of King Eadred (946-55) who was the uncle of King Edgar.

The area was once a thriving agricultural region and saw a significant growth from the 13th century through to the 16th century. Around 1585, the Littleton family was granted this land by the crown and with a succession of Edwards (all 1st born children were given this name), the area developed even further not only agriculturally but also by providing better educational systems, this all took place during the rise of the Industrial Revolution era.

Following the development in later years of better transport and communication, the area evolved into a market town, holding a monthly farmers market which became quite well known and very popular.

Daniel Defoe once remarked that it was the greatest horse-fair for horses.

The main street, “Market Street”, boasts properties that date back to the 15th and 16th century; many are grade II listed buildings.

The Littleton Arms (built by one of the Edwards in 1794) has had various uses: originally utilised as a place for rent collection, it then became a magistrate court and finally it was turned into a social community centre. It is now used as a restaurant.

The town has been home to several famous names: Sir Robert Peel (Prime Minister), Handel and George Orwell to name but a few.

In 1665 Penkridge had its own currency known as the “Penkridge Token” (coinage) thus showing how important the trade was for this market town.
