Stafford rich in history
The word Stafford means “ford” by a “staithe” or ‘landing place’.
Stafford was supposedly founded around AD 700 by a Mercian prince named Bertelin. Legend has it that he founded a hermitage on the peninsula name Betheney. It was previously thought that the remains of a wooden preaching cross from this time had been discovered beneath the remains of St Bertelin’s Chapel. The evidence was recently examined and was found to be a coffin made from a tree-trunk. It is thought to have been placed there in commemoration of St Bertelin.
Stafford Castle which stands on the nearby hilltop was built by the Normans around 1090. Initially made of wood and later rebuilt using stone it has since been rebuilt twice, the 19th century gothic revival castle holds much of the original stonework. The castle is a popular tourist attraction with a visitor centre that uses audio visual displays and hands on items. The castle grounds is also home to a recreated medieval herb garden and Shakespeare productions are performed here each summer. The castle is an important landmark and is highly visible to drivers on the M6 motorway.
The oldest building in Stafford is now St Chads Church which dates back to the 12th Century. The church is popular for being richly decorated and the carvings in the church’s archways and pillars are thought to have been carved by a group of stone makers from the Middle East. The church took on a neo-classical style during the 17th and 18th centuries and much of the stonework was covered up. The Norman decoration was rediscovered during restoration work in the early 19th century. Visitors of the church can use “Timewalk2, a computer generated display which relates the journey of history and mystery within the walls of the church.
The Scottish poet, playwright and freelancer Carol Ann Duffy, though born in Glasgow, Scotland, grew up in Stafford and attended Stafford Girls' High School, Awarded an OBE in 1995 and a CBE in 2002, many of the poems she has written describe her experiences and places in Stafford.
