The History of Sutton Coldfield.

Sutton Coldfield is a town located north of the city of Birmingham. Located 8 miles (13 km) from Birmingham City Centre, the town was historically part of the county of Warwickshire before it became a part of the West Midlands in 1974.

The town is the largest parliamentary constituency in Birmingham and is home to the four electoral wards of Sutton Four Oaks, Sutton New Hall, Sutton Trinity and Sutton Vesey. The town covers over one fifth of Birmingham’s area and borders Staffordshire and Warwickshire countryside.

The Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield is a town steeped in history and its past continues to affect the character of the town even today.

Sutton Coldfield is an ancient town once being a part of the Kingdom of Mercia. Under the Earls of Warwick the town thrived, holding weekly markets and an annual fair making the town significant within its district.

The town became a Royal manor in 1489 and remained owned by the royals until 1528. It was then that, through Bishop Vesey, Henry VIII granted the town its first charter of incorporation, giving the town the title ‘The Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield’ for the rest of time. Although Bishop Vesey wished to turn the Royal Town into a thriving and busy centre, its rural character remained right until the 19th century, which is when its popularity as a residential area began.

The town remained under the ruling of the Warden and Society until 1885 when a Royal Commission created a new town Council. The first Mayor of Sutton Coldfield was announced as J. Benjamin Stone a talented photographer at the time and he thus came to represent the town’s population of less than 8000 people.

This administration continued until the 1970s when Sutton Coldfield moved from the County of Warwickshire to the District of Birmingham.

Sutton Coldfield today is home to Sutton Park, the largest Local Authority Park within the United Kingdom and is now a thriving town. Made up of mainly a residential areas with a small amount of industry but containing a large shopping mall and a suburban office area. The park provides a large area of natural beauty containing a diverse array of plant species and wildlife and the two combine to provide an array of amenities to residents.
