A Short History of Walmley

Walmley is a residential area located 2 miles (4 km) southeast of Sutton Coldfield, near to Wydle Green, Pype Hayes, Erdington and Minworth and south of Thimble End, 7 miles (11.2 km) northeast of Birmingham city centre.

The exact origins of this area are very sketchy, but history has shown that it was used mainly as a catchment community area for workers from Langley Hall, New Hall Manor, Peddimore Hall and Penns Hall.

Its mention in the Doomsday book does not have any description of any church, inn or community centre attached to it.

It would seem that the Bishop of Exeter, John Vesey, played a role in the early development stages of this area: he built a total of 51 cottages, one of which is the Ford Keepers Cottage build on the banks of Plantsbrook, and is now a listed building.

The 1st church in the area, built in 1845, is St John the Evangelist Church, built by D.R. Hill.

1878 saw the development of the Penns Railway Station, but throughout this time until 20th century it remained a very small rural village.

During World War II it housed an Italian Prisoner of War Camp and this was located in an area known as Jones Wood.

In 1881 the population was recorded as 1,301 but by the 1991 census this had grown to 17,294.

In the 20th century Walmley was developed into a “Boom Surburb” and became an affluent area of Sutton Coldfield. It was purposely built that way to attract a more upper class community of people.

Most of the properties in the area were demolished to accommodate these larger properties.

New Hall Manor has gained the title of the oldest inhabited moat house in Great Britain.

The Fox Pub is believed to have been built pre 1930 and is well situated within Walmley Village along with its main shopping parade which was refurbished in 2004.

Walmley built 2 Almshouses in the 19th century and 1 in 1971 which was opened by Princess Anne, these buildings are now used as municipal buildings for various charities. The Almshouses were named Lingard House after Frances Lingard a local spinster who was their benefactress.
